Number of YouTube users

YouTube remains one of Japan’s most widely used video platforms, with an estimated 81.0 million users in 2026, according to JapanBuzz. This is equivalent to approximately 66% of Japan’s population, highlighting the platform’s extensive presence in the country. With content spanning entertainment, gaming, education, news and product research, YouTube offers brands opportunities to connect with audiences across a wide range of interests.

Demographics of active users

YouTube’s audience extends beyond younger generations, with the platform attracting viewers across a broad range of ages. JapanBuzz reports a gender split of 54% male and 46% female, indicating a relatively balanced audience with a slight male majority. Viewing is not limited to smartphones and tablets: many Japanese households also watch YouTube on television, sharing content with family members and partners.

What people are searching for on Youtube

Music, gaming and entertainment feature prominently in Japan’s YouTube searches. According to JapanBuzz’s 2026 report, based on Google Trends data for the 12 months leading up to 1 July 2026, the following were the top search queries in Japan, translated into English. (see the original here).

Unique features of YouTube

YouTube is a regular part of daily life for many people in Japan. A January 2026 survey by hotice and RASA JAPAN found that 65.5% of the 531 respondents used YouTube almost every day. Hence, it is not a surprise that people saying the channel motivated them to purchase a product. When looking at product posts on social platforms, the people in the survey said that the most motivating items were “detailed reviews” and this is not so easy with text and static images as users lose interest quickly. On the other side of the fence, video can offer a large and detailed amount of information whilst holding the viewer’s attention and is why YouTube is crucial in motivating people to purchase products.

YouTube offers a media alternative to television and when looking at the evidence available, it is likely that this trend will continue to rise. Understanding this is essential when entering or working with the Japanese market.
