In May 2026, TAMLO and Dapple, a With Content company, created a whitepaper and hosted a seminar in Singapore titled Breaking the Funnel: How Culture Shapes B2B Buying in Southeast Asia & Japan.

Working together, the two strategic agencies focused on a challenge many regional and global marketers face: why strategies that work in one market don’t always translate smoothly across other markets, specifically Southeast Asia and Japan.

For B2B marketers who manage multi-market campaigns, the traditional funnel model, that moves from awareness to consideration and then purchase, remains useful. In practice, however, buying behavior across markets is rarely that straightforward. In Japan and Southeast Asia, the path to purchase can be better understood by looking at trust-building, corporate hierarchies, cultural expectations, communication norms, and professional decision-making processes.

Viewing localisation as a final translation step in adapting global campaigns for specific markets is a trap many fall into for lack of understanding. To build credibility in specific markets across Southeast Asia and Japan, cultural understanding should inform strategies from the very beginning.

Why “Asia” Cannot Be Treated as One Market

One of the key themes from our whitepaper is that “Asia” is not a single, uniform market.

Southeast Asia is highly diverse, with each country having vastly different languages, cultures, religions, digital habits, regulatory environments, levels of economic development, and business norms. What works in Singapore as a messaging strategy might not work in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, or the Philippines without careful consideration of each country’s unique characteristics.

Japan presents another challenge. Compared to the diversity of Southeast Asia, Japan can appear simple. However, Japan is a market where showcasing overseas success on its own is rarely enough. B2B buyers in Japan look for signs of long-term commitment to the market, local relevance, and reliability in particular before they feel confident enough to engage with novel, international brands.

In other words, the challenge is not simply about how to reach buyers; the challenge is how to earn their trust.

Trust Looks Different Across Southeast Asia and Japan

Trust is central to B2B decision-making across both Southeast Asia and Japan, but it is built differently.

In Southeast Asia, trust is often shaped by relationships, local context, cultural resonance, and sensitivity to communication norms. Personal relationships, referrals, events, and one-to-one communication play an important role in how buyers discover and evaluate vendors.

In Japan, trust is more often built through evidence, consistency, and careful substantiation. Japanese B2B audiences generally respond better to communication that is structured, professional, modest in tone, and supported by clear data or examples. Strong claims without enough proof can feel risky or suspicious, especially in formal business contexts.

This difference matters because the same piece of content may need to play different roles across markets. In one market, it might help start a conversation. In another, it might help convince a lead enough for them to inquire about a specific solution.

Moving From Conversion to Connection

Breaking the funnel does not mean abandoning the funnel completely. It means recognising that B2B buyers do not move through it in the same way everywhere.

In Southeast Asia and Japan, marketers need to think beyond visibility and conversion metrics. They need to ask:

  • How is trust built in this market?
  • Who influences the decision internally?
  • What type of content helps buyers feel confident?
  • Which touchpoints matter before a formal inquiry is made?
  • How much localisation is needed before a campaign feels credible?

The answers will differ by market. That is why effective regional marketing requires both consistency and flexibility: a clear brand strategy, supported by local insight and culturally relevant execution.
